It depends on what streamed media you are referring to.

The rough boy vid (which Slim hates me having available heheheheh), isn't streamed per se, i.e. we don't have a dedicated Real Video server here so I use HTTP streaming for it. As such, I can't use any of the dedicated server 'tricks' like authentication etc.

Like I said, you didn't say which media. Quicktime, Real, WMV.

You also didn't say which app you were using to display them, nor what operating system, or any useful pointers for that matter.

Does your school use a netcache or proxy that uses authentication?

No. You eventually said that they were the programs you used to view the files. You didn't say which of them (or any other) generated the password request.

Just out of interest, give me an example link to a video file that results in asking for a password.

Interestingly, when i try 2 click on an mp3 on the comedy ting it gives me this question -in wmp, so i have 2 save the target and then play it. sorry

What question?

Sorry but you are doing a naff job of explaining yourself.

Are you using a browser to view the ftp site?

If so are you attempting to play the file directly from the website in WMP?

If you are then of course you will be asked for a password. This is one of the main problems with using browsers for ftping. FTP clients use constant sessions. You login, you stay connected til you logout. On the other hand, the browser uses 'stateless' connections, i.e. it requests the page/site from the remote server. The remote server responds with the webpage then promptly forgets about you. This is why browsers and web servers need cookies to remember who people/connections are.

So for example...
  1. Browser requests access to ftp site
  2. Server requests password
  3. Browser asks user for password
  4. User fills in password
  5. Browser sends password to server
  6. Browser then access first directory/page
  7. User changes directory
  8. Browser then relogs in with password previously memorised
  9. User clicks on MP3
  10. WMP opens new connection to FTP server
  11. Server asks WMP for password
  12. etc etc etc

If you want to get the best file transfer rates then use an FTP client. There are plenty of free ones about. Personally I use CuteFTP (and have done for years), it isn't free, but it is good.

You still haven't said which of them generates the user/password dialogue.

All of them can't be doing it. I suspect it's the browser, but I can't really tell until you say what is exactly on the dialogue. A screenshot would be great. If it's the browser it should have something referring to 'domain' on it. If it does then whatever you are accessing is using http authentication.

explanation satisfactory your honnor?

Not quite :)

This is what I don't understand. All 3 simultaneously? Individually? Normally the caption bar of the popup dialogue can give you a clue.

Simplicity itself. Ever noticed that keyboard button at the top that says "Print Scrn"?

You can either press that (at which point it copies a screenshot to the clipboard) then open a graphics package (Paint for example) and copy what's on the clipboard into an image.

Or you can press Alt-PrintScrn which will copy a screenshot of the active window (ie just the window not the rest of the screen) into the clipboard.
